Evergreen AL Area Guide

Evergreen is located midway between the state capital of Montgomery, just 78 miles away, and the gulf beaches near Mobile, just 90 miles away.  Interstate 65 passes by Evergreen with 2 exits going into downtown Evergreen. Evergreen is the county seat of Conecuh County.  The total land area of Evergreen is 850.9 square miles.

Evergreen is a down home town where you can ride your horse down the streets, get together on the grass in the center of town and enjoy or participate in local talents in music and the arts.

The first inhabitants were most likely Indians attracted to the site while traveling the Native American trading path from Pensacola to the Upper Creek Nation. Present day inhabitants come from every walk of life and across the nation.  With the towns ever growing industries and access to the interstate, it attracts professionals as well as the retirees.

Conecuh County History

Conecuh County was organized in 1818.  The name “Conecuh” originates from the Native American word for “land of Cane”.  Just outside of Evergreen lies an ongoing archaeological site that reveals a Native American culture dating from before Christ.
It is written that William B. Travis, the commander of the Texas defenders at the Alamo was a resident of Conecuh County until he was 20 years old.
